Romeo and Juliet Book – Publication Design
Brief:
Re-design a banned book and bring a new twist to the original meaning
Concept:
Romeo and Juliet, the Renaissance play by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy written
about two young teenagers that have gotten caught in the middle of their feuding
families. The topic of race has been a touchy subject throughout our country’s
history. In this telling of Romeo and Juliet, there is a focus on interracial relationships
throughout history. I gave the book the subtitle of “A rose by any other name” to
quote Juliet when she is talking about the fact that if Romeo had only come from a
different family, he would still be the same person. Our skin color does not dictate
who we are on the inside. The books design is to reflect the traditional Renaissance
style with an ornate cover, simple, symmetric, and legible typographic treatment.
