KAREN GILLAN – PASTEL PORTRAIT

Brief:
Create a pastel portrait of Karen Gillan.

Concept:
I love using contrasting colors and for this piece I really wanted to showcase the contrast between her hair and the greenery surrounding her. I started with a pencil outline just to block where the colors were needing to go, then I started on the skin and build up from there. The hair was the last to color in. I used bold bright colors to show off her fiery, red hair. I wanted the look of the pastels to be almost painterly so I used paint brushes to smooth out some of the harsh lines created by the chalk and blend the colors into each other.
