BALLERINA – ACRYLIC PAINTING

Brief:
Paint a detailed depiction of a dancer off stage.

Concept:
When starting this piece, I wanted to show the backstage view of a dancer looking onto the lights on stage. As a dancer myself, it has always been such an adventure backstage that not a lot of people get to experience. There is so much hustle and bustle that the average person never get's to see. Here I wanted to depict the quiet moments backstage of just looking longingly to the lights and waiting for your turn to dance in them. I am inspired by Degas' style of painting ballet and wanted to incorporate that in this piece. I used big brush strokes and fluid motion to show depth and value in the large tutu the dancer is wearing. The contrast of the light from the stage and the darkness of the backstage is to emphasis the contrast of the emotions from the quiet darkness of the curtains to the bright joy of dancing.
